LAKELAND -- Clearwater's Jim Larson kicked off the
2002 Florida Senior Games State Championships,
presented by the Villages, by winning the 10K Road
Race at Lake Hollingsworth Saturday morning with a
time of 46:38. Larson topped the second place
finisher, Dave Egan, of Punta Gorda by 27 seconds.
Larson closed out the race with a time of 7:35 in the
fourth mile, 7:33 in the fifth mile and 7:34 in the
sixth mile. Martha King, of Huntington Beach, CA, was
the women's winner with a time of 54:32.
Snappy Tomato Pizza swept through Saturday with three
victories in the softball competition at Winter
Haven's DiamonPlex. The 55+ Snappy Tomato Pizza team
banged out 66 hits and seven home runs while scoring
62 runs in a pair of wins over the Lakeland Angels and
a victory against the Melbourne Astros 60+ team.
Shortstop Tom Simmons had a home run in each of the
three victories.
In the Women's 50+ softball competition, the Central
Florida Lady Patriots won the gold medal on a tie
breaker as the Patriots, Village Green and Florida
Spirit all had 1-1 records. In winning their final
game against the Florida Spirit 20-7, the Patriots
gave up 21 runs in two games to win the gold. Village
Green gave up 28 runs while the Florida Spirit allowed
31 runs.
In the Archery competition at Mulberry Park, eight
State Games records were set and another was tied as
all 61 archers qualified for the 2003 National Senior
Games. In the 65+ Women's Recurve Competition,
Dolores Pressler of Boca Raton, established a record
in her third age group with a 722 out of a possible
900 score. Pressler set the record for the 55+ age
group in 1994 and holds the 60+ record from the 1999
State Games.
The 11th Annual Florida Senior Games State
Championships continues on Sunday with competition in
five sports. Badminton will be played at the Florida
Southern Gymnasium, Horseshoes will be pitched at
Winter Haven's Rotary Park, Skeet Shooting will be
held at Polk County Trap & Skeet, Swimming is at Gandy
Pool and the Championship bracket of the Men's 50+
Softball competition is at Winter Haven's DiamondPlex.
Over 2,000 of Florida's finest senior athletes over
the age of 50 will participate in the Annual Games
through Sunday, December 15. The Florida Senior Games
State Championships is a program of the Florida Sports
Foundation, the official sports promotion and
development organization of the State of Florida, and
hosted by Polk County Sports Marketing.
